To say that Puchong is a food haven is an understatement. This place is crowded with food outlets every which way and making a decision of where/what to eat here can be quite a challenge. The variety is mind-boggling, to say the least. So for this post, I shall just focus on noodles. These are some of my favourite places to slurp down those delicious strands whenever the cravings hit.

THE STALL IS RIGHT AT THE FRONT OF THE KOPITIAM

This stall is run by the daughter of the original stall owner, Lim Siong Kee in Kota Bharu where it has garnered a legion of fans. I was told that stall in Jalan Hamzah, Kota Bharu is very popular and they have been touted “the best beef noodles in Kelantan”. Opened in end 2012, this stall in Pouching has also made quite a name for itself.

TENDONS, TRIPE, BALLS, BEEF – THEY ARE ALL GOOD!

The main pull is the divinely aromatic beef broth. Its richness is evident in its dark hue and cloudy appearance from hours of boiling beef, tripe, beef bones and radish. There are a few variety of noodles for selection but I find the best one is the long smooth rice noodles (“lai fun”).

THE “DRY” VERSION

You can have the noodles served in the beef broth with all the condiments – sliced beef rump, gelatinous tendons, tripe and bouncy beef balls. In the “dry” version, the noodles are tossed with dark soya sauce, topped with minced beef and the beefy broth with all the condiments served in a separate bowl. Chopped coriander leaves and fried shallots crown the noodles with their unmistakable fragrance. Oh, the chilli dip is really kickass too.

Price: RM8.00 (soupy noodles), RM8.50 (dry noodles)

Pork Noodles
Restoran Puchong Fatt Kee
45G Jalan Bandar 1
Pusat Bandar Puchong
47160 Puchong
Selangor
Tel: 010-7981-069
Open from 8.00am till 2.00pm

Good pork noodles almost always have a cult following. There are such places where people would queue for an hour or more just to have a bowl of this porky addiction. In Puchong alone, there are several popular pork noodles shops but what stands out, for me, is this particular stall in Fatt Kee kopitiam.

With a long queue of waiting customers, the stall has a good management system. You place your order at the stall itself, manned by a cool dude wearing a cap and a few Indon workers and you will be given a red plastic plaque with a number. Place this plaque on your table and your noodles will be served to you in due course.

The noodles are submerged beneath a generous pile of minced & sliced pork, liver, intestines and bouncy pork balls. Cabbage leaves add on the sweetness of the cloudy porky broth. A drizzle of garlic oil on top completes the serving. This bowl of porky goodness is enough to satiate any pork noodles cravings, for sure.

Mee Rebus
Kedai Kopi Min Ren
10G Jalan Bandar 2
Pusat Bandar Puchong
47160 Puchong
Selangor
Open from 8.00am till 3.00pm

You may miss out on this as the stall selling this Mee Rebus is not a dedicated stall. The stall, located right at the front, sells Nasi Lemak, Assam Laksa, Prawn Mee and also “Mixed Rice” – talk about being entrepreneurial!

THE STALL SELLS OTHER DISHES TOO

The thick gravy of this Mee Rebus is an unusual shade of light brown, thanks to the addition of mashed potatoes. The condiments include fried prawn fritters, beancurd, boiled potatoes, half a boiled egg and sambal sotong garnished with chopped coriander leaves and green chillies. The fiery red sambal packs quite a punch, mix this up with the noodles and gravy to even out the diverse flavours and you are in for some really good bites.

Price: RM4.50 per plate

Duck Noodles
Restoran Ramai Food Centre
33G Jalan Bandar 10
Pusat Bandar Puchong
47160 Puchong
Selangor
Open from 8.00am till 8.00pm

The scent of Chinese herbs wafts through the air when this bowl of piping hot Duck Noodles is placed on our table. The soup with a whole duck thigh has been double-boiled for hours with aromatic Chinese herbs.

The tasty soup, full of wholesome herbal goodness and subtle duck flavour is comforting food at its best, especially when smooth soft “mee suah” is added. The duck meat is super tender and a bit bland after the hours of double-boiling… just dip it in the chilli padi soya sauce and all is good.

Besides Duck Thigh Soup, there are other herbal soups with ribs, black chicken and kampung chicken in the steaming boiler but the duck soup seems to be the most popular.

Price: RM8.00 per bowl

Special Smooth Pan Mee
Kedai Makanan Fa Kee
80 Jalan TK1/1
Taman Kinrara
47180 Puchong
Selangor
Open from 8.00am till 2.00pm

Uncle Chan has been selling his Special Smooth Pan Mee for the past 8 years. At his stall you don’t see any roller machine as the Pan Mee here is all hand-made. The Pan Mee comes in broad strips in random lengths, a result of Uncle Chan’s skills in pulling out balls of dough in a basin of water. The pulling and stretching is all done beneath water where the dough would have softened. The texture of these long broad strips is slithery smooth with a delightful bite to them.

THE DRY VERSION

The Special Smooth Pan Mee comes in both the soupy and dry versions. The soup is sweet and tasty, a result of simmering pork bones and anchovies for hours. There are minced and sliced pork, thick slices of chinese mushrooms, fried beancurd skin, crunchy anchovies and a choice of either lettuce leaves or “sayur manis”. For the dry version, the Pan Mee is tossed in a concoction of black soya sauce, oyster sauce and made more aromatic with some lardy oil in it before being topped with minced pork, accompanied by a bowl of the sweet porky soup.

Price: RM5.50 per bowl

Curry Laksa
The curry laksa in this same kopitiam is very decent too, in case you are looking for some spicy flavours. The curry broth is not too rich with just the right blend of spices. Toppings are chicken, long beans, tofu puffs, crispy fried fuchook and those divine plump cockles!
